The amount of planes is determined by how many horizontal and vertical angles the PIR can detect when viewed from the side. In the image below this detector has 6 planes.

On a wall mounted detector, the planes that are looking downwards cover the creep zone and the most horizontal plane determines the PIR's maximum length.
